MATUA LODGE ~ 9 LEVERS ROAD ~ MATUA ~ TAURANGA

GUEST COMMENTS

We have enjoyed a truly delightful stay at Matua Lodge which has made our last four days in New Zealand extra special. Our hosts Julia and Graham are generous and kind, with hospitality that is warm and friendly. Our room has a seaside view that is enchanting no matter what the weather! The Lodge is like a home away from home which makes travellers feel instantly relaxed and at peace. We highly recommend Matua Lodge to anyone who wishes to explore the Bay of Plenty Mt Maunganui and the hot spas or White Island as they are all within reach with a car. Thank you Julia and Graham for a wonderful time! Kia Ora

Medieval meets Modern - just marvellous!
If you are looking for a uniquely wonderful place to stay in Tauranga, look no further than Matua Lodge. Julia and Graham will make you feel like a member of their family; they are just so warm and welcoming. The Lodge itself is built in a "modern medieval" style, but has all the comforts and conveniences you could wish for. We stayed in the apartment, and also had the twin room below it for our 2 adult daughters; the setup was perfect for our family. We enjoyed the use of our own loungeroom and kitchenette, but equally enjoyed spending time chatting with Julia and Graham in their amazing lounge area, sharing travel stories, wine and international friendship. There is a nice outside spa, lovely bathrooms, very comfy beds, and a pretty view. Breakfasts were delicious! Matua Lodge is very difficult to fault, very easy to recommend!
Room Tip: For a couple the Hibiscus Room would be perfect; for a family the apartment and room below are ideal...

outstanding holiday stays ever. Highly recommended.
It is without doubt the most fantastic stay we have ever had in a B&B and it is in our own "almost" backyard. Julia and Graham are wonderful and caring hosts and treat guests like family. The house is stunning with very high quality finishes, amenities, decor and furniture. You have beautiful views of Mt Manganui, the harbour and islands from the decks, rooms and garden. We stayed in the Pohutakawa apartment which has a big lounge with Sky TV, beautiful furniture and a good selection of books (kids too), games and magazines. The kitchen is very well equipped with quality tableware, range of teas & coffee and healthy snacks. The upstairs bedroom has a very comfy bed, TV and balcony with great views. We had access to a spa on the deck which was very relaxing after a long day of sight-seeing. The breakfasts were another highlight. Julia's home-made muesli with fruit salad and yoghurt is delicious and we had a range of cooked breakfast options. The coffee is on par with the best Auckland cafes. Chatting to Julia and Graham over breakfast and during our stay was a delight. We can not speak highly enough of Matua Lodge and our hosts. It will exceed your expectations and I would have rated it 10++++ if I could. We will be back. Thank you Julia and Graham for a very memorable stay.

Hands down one of the greatest guest house experiences I have ever had !

We were just looking for somewhere nice to base ourselves for a our travels around the region and we stumbled across Matua Lodge. It's hard not to be totally blown away by the sheer beauty of the guesthouse upon arrival - especially when upon approach one feels as though they are entering just a regular neighbourhood but then you reach the gates of Matua Lodge and one could easily be driving into a chalet in the Swiss Alps! Our hosts Julia & Graham were called away urgently so they had their lovely neighbour greet us and let us in - from that moment we had a very clear understanding of the kind, considerate hosts they are. We stayed in the one bedroom apartment which was just delightful - the perfect mix of old world charm with all the comforts of modern living. My personal favourite part of Matua Lodge was waking up to the view of Mt Maunganui across the water every morning then wandering down the hall for a beautiful breakfast with Julia and Graham most mornings (sometimes we did our own thing too) - I am one of "those' people when it comes to dietary requirements but we gave them a heads up in an email before our arrival and they accommodated all my gluten free vegan needs whilst simultaneously wow-ing my partner with bacon & eggs! Julia & Graham were friendly and warm without being intrusive, they made our stay in the area so easy and pleasant - always more than happy to provide us with handy local tips, oh and lend us Mountain Bikes!! If we're ever back in that neck of the woods, Matua Lodge will be a no-brainer! Such a great place to stay. Thank you for your stellar hospitality!

Graham and Julia made us feel very welcome. A bottle of wine, cheese, crackers and fruit was a very nice surprise as well. The accommodations were excellent and exceeded our expectations. Definitely will return and have recommended this place to our friends. The architect who designed the estate did an amazing job and you have a sense that this place will last a thousand years.

Wow! What a find! A piece of Tuscany in the Bay of Plenty. Beautifully appointed accommodation in a unique setting. Everything is provided for the most discerning of visitors with a friendly smile from the well travelled hosts to make your stay thoroughly enjoyable and memorable.

We would like to thank Julia and Graham Cornes for our  wonderful weekend stay at Matua Lodge.
Their warmth and hospitality together with their very impressive environment made our weekend even more special.  Our spacious bedroom was tucked away at one end of the house and every morning when we drew the curtains we had a magnificent view of the harbour waiting for us. The room was perfect with it’s own ensuite bathroom and a shower that you needed a manual to operate with all the extra jets!!!
Breakfast was very relaxing, with Julia’s homemade museli, yoghurt and fruits along wth generous helpings of toast and condiments. The conversation was scintillating as was the view. The double doors had been opened to allow us an uninterrupted view of the garden and harbour.  It was difficult to pull ourselves away, but we managed it, knowing that we would be returning to the wonderful company, views and amazingly comfortable and relaxed surroundings.
The architecture of the house is based around a medieval castle design but with a very modern take.  It is tasteful,  finished to the highest quality and with all the mod con’s.  It is set down off the street and as you walk in through the most impressive double front doors you enter into a magic haven.
Matua Lodge is a slice of paradise, that anyone lucky enough to experience will not want to leave.

Matua Lodge will stun you with its kerb-side appeal. Julia & Graham have brought this fabulous house, originally built of the highest quality materials, back to new life in the most wonderful way and are very warm and friendly hosts. The location is simply gorgeous. The house lends itself beautifully to its new role of providing comfort and pleasure to guests. The place simply abounds with a huge number of “surprise and delight” features and truly fits the description of boutique. This is a very special place that you simply must experience for yourselves.

"We stayed in the Pohutakawa Apartment and it was marvelous! The pictures don't do it justice, the property is unique and has been developed with thought and an eye for detail. Julia and Graham were superb hosts, offering fantastic hospitality and a warm welcoming. We thoroughly enjoyed the use of the spa pool at night allowing us to relax and gaze at the stars, and then the beautiful view in the morning towards The Mount was stunning. Would definitely stay here again!" Adam – Auckland - March 2017

“We loved Everything!!!!! We have never been so impressed by a place and have both travelled over seas and within our own country. Julia and Graham  were so accommodating, our room was beautiful, we had our own private courtyard with ocean views. It was simply heaven.

Couldn't fault the place.”
